Chief Steven P. Lavigne and members of the Taunton Fire Department invite community members to attend the Department’s open house later this month.
WHEN:
Thursday, Oct. 26 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
WHERE:
Oakland Fire Station, 49 North Walker St.
WHAT:
During Taunton Fire’s Open House, members of the Taunton community will have the opportunity to come check out the Oakland Fire Station and meet Department members. This is a free, family-friendly event that is open for all to enjoy.
Those in attendance can participate in several fun activities, meet new friends, and enjoy treats provided by the Department.
There will be touch-a-truck outside and a water-flowing station where attendees will be assisted by firefighters in using fire hoses to spray a fake house. Children will also be able to take a ride on a “fire truck” during which members of the Department will pull them around the station in a wagon.
Tours of the safety trailer will also be conducted. Inside the station attendees can help themselves to pizza, popcorn, and games hosted by Taunton Triad.
Most importantly, attendees will have the chance to meet Sparky the Fire Dog and learn more about fire safety and prevention.
The Department’s open house follows Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 8-14). This year’s campaign is “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention” and the Taunton Fire Department offers these key safety tips to help reduce the risk of a cooking fire:
- Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
- Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
About Fire Prevention Week:
Fire Prevention Week is organized by the National Fire Protection Association with the goal of educating the public about simple but important ways they can keep themselves and those they live with safe.
